History of our library

Our library was established as a department under the Mechanical Engineering Department of METU Gaziantep Campus.

The first preparations were completed and the library was opened on 1 October 1973 in the old Nursery Building.

The main librarianship principles in METU Ankara Library are the classification system (LC Library of
Congreess) and other rules (AACR2 cataloguing rules) and guidelines were adopted as a basis.

Initially, 587 books were obtained from METU Ankara Library and 183 books were initially catalogued.

With the decision of the Board of Trustees dated 9 July 1976, the Library was transformed into a Directorate.

The Library was moved to the ground floor of the Mechanical Engineering Department on 11 November 1978.

Since its separation from METU in June 1987 and its establishment as Gaziantep University, it has been operating as the University Central Library.

The Department of Library and Documentation started to serve in its new building on 14.7.1995 with the relocation of administrative offices on 27.3.1995 and Reader Services in June 1995.

In 2000, thanks to the BLISS Library Automation Program purchased in 2000, the catalogue was transferred to the computer environment.
